The Denver Gaels GAA Club is a group of individuals focused on the promotion of Gaelic sports (hurling, Gaelic football and camogie) in the state of Colorado.

The Gaels host a variety of social events, organize competative leagues, compete nationally, but primarily expand interest in the great sports of the Emerald Isle. If sounds like something for you, come out and try one of the following sports:

Hurling --
Hurling is a field sport played with wooden sticks (hurleys), a ball similar to a baseball, but minimally softer called a sliother, and large H-shaped goal posts. Knocking the ball over the bar is worth 1 point. Scoring a goal in the net (about the size of a soccer goal) is worth 3 points. Passing the ball to teammates can be done using the hurley or by swatting the sliother with the hand, but not throwing it. Each player is allowed three steps with the sliother in hand, and can have the sliother in hand two times per possession. After that, it must be shot, passed or kicked. Hurling is a very physical, fast-paced, exciting and historic game.

Gaelic Football --
Think soccer...with hands. The goal system is the same as that of hurling noted above - 1 point over the bar, 3 points in the goal. The player has the ability to possess the ball with the hands twice per possession. He/she may take three steps with the ball in hand. After three steps the player must either get rid of the ball, bounce it for a second possession or kick it back up into the hands for another possession. Remember -- two hand possessions only. The ball may also be played on the ground like in soccer, but cannot be picked up directly from the ground. It must be kick up to one's self for the hand possession.

Camogie --
Think hurling...for girls. The rules are exactly the same as hurling, but Irish fellas need not apply. This game is reserved for the lasses.

The Gaels are always eager to field new players. No experience necessary, just a willingness to meet great people and try out an adventurous new sport.

Denver's Sports Interests

Denver is into 4 sports.

Denver's Gaelic Sports Profile
My Comments: Hurling and Gaelic Football! Fantastically fun sports from the Ancient Emerald Isle! Don't miss out on your heritage, it's one of the best parts of this culture. We have teams for men and women in both sports here at the Denver Gaels and we're always teaching new players!

Denver's Lacrosse Profile
My Comments: Lacrosse players pick up hurling very easily. The two sports may have a common ancient ancestor. Hurling is more fun, though.

Positions: Goalie , Attacker , Midfielder , Defenseman
Denver's Rugby Profile
My Comments: Rugby players can be very effective footballers (that's Gaelic Football). Gaelic Football could be described by some as the meeting point of rugby and soccer. Hurling involves severe conditioning, which Rugby players are usually already accostomed to. This enables them to focus on learning the 250 skills and do it quickly. It's also probably the best team sport on earth to develop speed of foot.

work & school

Occupation: Scoring, either by shooting a small ball into a defended 'soccer goal'(3 pts), or by shooting the ball over the top cross-bar and between the uprights for a single point.
Company(ies): Thirteen players on the field per side, movement is only restricted in your opponent's immediate goal area (called the small square).
Organizations: Field is approximately the size of three soccer pitches laid side by side. (by side).

hobbies & interests

Hobbies: A player can advance the ball in nearly infinite ways, provided that they never take more than four steps with ball in hand and they never take ball into the hand three times in a row.
Favorite Teams: Common methods of advancement are to carry the ball balanced or bouncing on the end of the Hurl, to catch the ball twice then bounce it off of the grass and repeat, or most commonly, to pass.
Favorite College Teams: Striking with the hand (usually called 'handpassing') cannot be used to score a goal, but kicking can.
Favorite Players: Passing can be accomplished by striking the ball with the hurl from the hand, in the air or on the ground. The ball can also be struck with the hand, arm, head or feet at any time (except to score)
Favorite TV Shows: To play one needs a hurl, footwear, and head protection. Other equipment is optional.
Favorite Movies: If the ball is sent over the 'end-line' (from the goal corners to the sidelines) by the defense, the offense takes a 'free' from sixty five yards out (or forty five in Junior B nationals and camogie)
Favorite Books: If the ball is sent over the end-line by the offense, the defending keeper takes a "puck-out" and drives the ball downfield from his small square.
Favorite Music: 35 minute halves, six substitutes allowed in official games. Overtimes are played in 10 minute pairs.
Favorite Quotes: Side-ins are taken from the ground, usually struck with the hurl in such a way as to create an arching "nine-iron" shot. Scoring directly from a side-in is possible, but extrememly difficult.
Preferred Gym: A player who has taken posession of the ball can be tackled by any of his opponents so long as the contact is shoulder-shoulder or hip-hip (hip-face is acceptable if your opponent is too short)
