The Denver Gaels GAA Club is a group of individuals focused on the promotion of Gaelic sports (hurling, Gaelic football and camogie) in the state of Colorado. The Gaels host a variety of social events, organize competative leagues, compete nationally, but primarily expand interest in the great sports of the Emerald Isle. If sounds like something for you, come out and try one of the following sports: Hurling -- Hurling is a field sport played with wooden sticks (hurleys), a ball similar to a baseball, but minimally softer called a sliother, and large H-shaped goal posts. Knocking the ball over the bar is worth 1 point. Scoring a goal in the net (about the size of a soccer goal) is worth 3 points. Passing the ball to teammates can be done using the hurley or by swatting the sliother with the hand, but not throwing it. Each player is allowed three steps with the sliother in hand, and can have the sliother in hand two times per possession. After that, it must be shot, passed or kicked. Hurling is a very physical, fast-paced, exciting and historic game. Gaelic Football -- Think soccer...with hands. The goal system is the same as that of hurling noted above - 1 point over the bar, 3 points in the goal. The player has the ability to possess the ball with the hands twice per possession. He/she may take three steps with the ball in hand. After three steps the player must either get rid of the ball, bounce it for a second possession or kick it back up into the hands for another possession. Remember -- two hand possessions only. The ball may also be played on the ground like in soccer, but cannot be picked up directly from the ground. It must be kick up to one's self for the hand possession. Camogie -- Think hurling...for girls. The rules are exactly the same as hurling, but Irish fellas need not apply. This game is reserved for the lasses.
